My mother was a psychology professor at the University of Denver. She used to teach a class on late adulthood to the PsyD graduate students there. Noting yesterday that old age is rough, she added these wise words:
If you're young enough to teach that class, you can't really understand what it's like to be old. But if you're old enough to know better, you're too weak to teach.

There's a heck of a punch in those lines.
My father who is 89 tells me often these days that he didn't mind getting old....it's being old that's a drag.
Sounds like your mom is still pretty sharp!
My mother does not think she is old. She refuses to use a cane because it would "make her feel old." So I assume she feels she is not old!
Her grandmother was the same way. When she (my own great-grandmother) was living in a nursing home at age 92 she used to talk about "all these old ladies who live here" and how she had to help them tie their shoes.
